Islam
Article Abstract:
Studies on Islam in China have been very meager as they were given marginal importance in both Sinological and Islamic scholarship. Only the Hui are identified as proper Chinese Muslims, as Chinese is their native language. The nine other Muslim nationalities in China are more a part of Central Asian studies. The Hui basically practice Sunni Islam. Early research on Muslims in China was mainly conducted by Protestant missionaries. In view of an increased access to mainland China, there is an increase in Islamic studies in China which, until now, had been researched primarily abroad and in Taiwan.

Taoism
Article Abstract:
Recent studies on Taoism have attempted to assess the religion in the broader context of Chinese society and civilization. Taoism is considered to have played an important role in the instruction of rulers and their legitimation, as well as being associated with utopianism and a doctrine of liberation through submission. Western studies on Taoism have focused on Taoist thought, practice and history, and there is an effort to begin studies on the early phase of Taoism, using primary sources and archaeological evidence. A selected bibliography covering the last 20 years is included.

Introduction
Article Abstract:
Chinese scholars have emphasized the study of history, philosophy and literature, thereby neglecting the study of Chinese religious traditions, which have been taken up by Japanese, European and North American scholars. Recent studies have confirmed that China's indigenous religion is Taoism, and the literature has also focused on the religious dimensions of Confucianism. Research has also touched upon aspects of women in Chinese religions, Manichaeism, popular religion, Buddhism, Islam and Chinese mythology.
