Marriage by abduction in twentieth century China
Article Abstract:
This article discusses the prevalence and social acceptance of marriage by abduction in China during the early and mid 20th century. The author argues that marriage by abduction in China during this time period should not be viewed as primitive but a rational response by the Chinese in which they were avoiding the complex and expensive dowry/bride system.

The persistence of a particular paradigm in the understanding of Chinese religion is illustrated and to some preliminary degree explained.
