Nonprimary exports of African LDCs: have trade preferences helped?
Article Abstract:
The impact of the US Generalized System of Preferences (US GSP) on the economies of Kenya, Mauritius, Tanzania and Zambia was analyzed. The aim of the US GSP, which was created at the 1968 UN Conference on Trade and Development, was to enhance the economies of African nations by expanding their nontraditional exports. The study showed that the impact of the US GSP on the economies of its beneficiary developing countries was not as dramatic as expected. This was due to the uncertainty regarding the lifespan of the program and the provisions of the competitive need limitations. No changes are expected in the near future because of the state of the US economy.

Trade liberalization in Thailand: a computable general equilibrium (CGE) analysis
Article Abstract:
Computable General Equilibrium methods are used to analyze macroeconomic scenarios and sectoral effects of implementing a trade liberalization strategy in the Thai economy over the predicted decade ending in the year 2000. The trade liberalization policy as embodied in an across-the-board tariff cut appears to have asymmetric sectoral effects. In addition to other deregulatory policy shocks, the implementation of a trade liberalization strategy would produce positive externalities maximizing the benign effects of freer trade.
