Of consorts and harlots in Thai popular history
Article Abstract:
Historical representations of Siamese women in Thai popular history reveal the existence of a society where females are subordinate to men and a gender knowledge which depicts men as the binary opposite of women. Thai stereotype of the consort in the late 19th century is portrayed in the book 'Sinlapa watthanatham,' a biography of King Mongkut's consort, Thiang. As in other popular history writings on Thai women, the book portrayed consorts as the traditional ideal of womanhood. On the other hand, prostitutes were perceived as women of loose morals and, thus, the opposite of consorts.
