On the genre morphology of legendry: belief story versus belief legend
Article Abstract:
Gillian Bennett has suggested that the term 'belief story' should be revived because 'belief legend' is associated strictly with modern legends. However, legend scholars have used the term 'belief legend' for decades without equating it with 'modern legend.' The usage suggested by Bennett would add to rather than reduce confusion in the genre morphology of legends. 'Belief legend' has also been criticized on the grounds that legends always involve belief. However, many legends do not illustrate traditional beliefs. Therefore, the term 'belief legend' should be retained as a useful category within the legend genre.
