Pakistan in 1998: the polity under pressure
Article Abstract:
Pakistan had an unenviable period in 1998 due to a combination of social, political and economic problems that hounded the country throughout the year. Despite the broader powers acquired by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his government, the political system was characterized by growing fragmentation and polarization that undermined government efforts to improve economic and social conditions. Meanwhile, Pakistan's nuclear testing activities obviously did not help in improving bilateral ties with other countries.
