Article Abstract:

There is a foundational tenet of the Amish that says people should choose their religion, and not be forced into it. Baptism into the Amish faith does not occur until ages 16-22, so until then, Amish youth have more freedom than their older counterparts. The youths join a group of peers and usually do not leave that group until they marry. Some groups are more liberal than others. Close to 85% of Amish youth choose to be baptised into the church after tasting the fruits of the modern world.
