Policing the savage: Segregation, labor and state medicine in the Andamans
Article Abstract:
The penal colony established by the British in the Andaman Islands in the 1850s was intended as a permanent exile for certain types of Indian criminals. Some of the techniques used by the colonial state to manage a criminalized population in the later nineteenth century, are examined.

A separate punishment: Juvenile offenders in colonial India
Article Abstract:
During 1850s, colonial India faced a problem with punishment of juveniles. Many modernizers proposed separate punishment for young offenders but this issue was never resolved.
