'Prince Among Slaves' is a 90-minute documentary, depicting the true story of an African prince, Abdul Rahman Ibrahima Sori, who was sold into slavery in the American South in 1788 and remained enslaved for forty years before ultimately regaining his freedom and returning to Africa. It describes the historical situation of the period in which he lived, attracting widespread sympathy, leading to his freedom and his skill of winning support from warring factions within the colonization movement.

Southern free people of color in the age of William Johnson

Article Abstract:

A free African American and a slave-owner, like William Johnson and others, was an offence to the sensibilities of the white South and the contradiction put Southern free people of color in jeopardy, leaving them subject to assault. During the period of slavery and after, free people of color were pulled in two directions, to the world of their fathers with wealth and acceptance by whites and that of their mothers, accompanied the memory of Africa and the shared culture of the slave quarter.

Free blacks in the urban South: 1800-1850

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on free African American life in urban South in America from 1800-1850, focusing on a group of the largest fifteen cities in 1850, and compared with data from northern states. Free African Americans were more prevalent in the South and formed their own societies due to prejudice and discrimination against them, and lived effectively, between two worlds in the southern cities, where law and ordinances were not always imposed.
