Race, region, and gender in American history
Article Abstract:
Gender roles can be moulded by communities, with various cultural, economic, political and social events influenced by these roles. Gender is a primary category of historical analysis, with women's political and social activities, their family relationships and work vital to understanding society and American history. This influence is highlighted by Vicki L. Ruiz in 'From Out of the Shadows: Mexican Women in Twentieth-Century America,' Theda Perdue in 'Cherokee Women: Gender and Culture Change, 1700-1835' and Tera Hunter in 'To "Joy My Freedom": Southern Black women's Lives and Labors After the Civil War.'

"Latent color" and "exaggerated snow": whiteness and race in Harriet Prescott Spofford's "The Amber Gods"
Article Abstract:
Harriet Prescott Spofford's work 'The Amber Gods' presents a measure of the transformations wrought upon New England's economy and culture by its merchant entrepreneurs' successful trading with Africa and the orient. Skin color in the mid-nineteenth century mattered very much in terms of gender, class and race and ethnic identity and "The Amber Gods" establishes from a "white" perspective how arbitrary and unknowable racial identity is and has always been at the very antebellum period when endeavors were made to draw up scientific certainties about racial difference.
