Reinventing the sacred: the romantic myth of Jakob Bohme
Article Abstract:
Myths developed by the Jena group about Jakob Bohme accounted for his acceptance by Romanticism as its earliest icon. Abraham von Franckenberg wrote of Bohme as a poetic prophet whose life imitated that of Jesus Christ. Ludwig Teick and Friedrich von Hardenberg used Bohme to restore a sense of the sacred to poetry. German Romanticism was thereby able to elevate its practice as equivalent to religion, a role later Romantics also adopted.

Response to Ulker Gokberk, "Culture Studies und die Turken." (response to Ulker Gokberk, German Quarterly, vol. 70.2, p. 122, Spring 1997)
Article Abstract:
US German studies programs should address issues affecting German minorities, such as the Turks, according to Ulker Gokberk. Her ideological stance on this issue, however, is flawed in that she focuses too heavily on Turkish culture and politics within Germany. A more rigorous intellectual stance is needed by German studies academics since Gokberk's approach emphasizes ideology over methodology.

Detecting ethnicity: Jakob Arjouni and the case of missing German detective novel
Article Abstract:
A Turkish private investigator in Germany confounds fellow citizens by emulating an American-style detective. Author Jakob Arjouni holds up the German insensitivity to foreigners and lack of imagination no matter how perfectly integrated and well spoken the Turkish protagonist comes across. Questions of race and law enforcement in modern Germany are aptly brought into play.
