Rethinking Indonesian forest policy: beyond the timber barons
Article Abstract:
Political and economic powers control the forest industry of Indonesia, resulting in forest exploitation. A threat to internal security is looming since political unrest already gripped the people in the Outer Islands. As many as 65 million Indonesians depend on forest resources while 22 million are engaged in long-term rotational farming. The central government is being pressured to give provincial and local governments more say in land-use decision-making. Popular political and economic participation is the basis for sustainable development which is also applicable to the forestry sector.

Taiwan's South China Sea policy
Article Abstract:
Taiwan's South China Sea policy seeks to peacefully resolve territorial disputes in the area, particularly the Spratly Islands. Taiwan is willing to cooperate with other claimants following the principles of the 1992 ASEAN Declaration on South China Sea. Taiwan believes confidence and security-building measures through joint development of the area would be economically constructive.
