South Korea's Kim Young Sam government: political agendas
Article Abstract:
South Korean Pres. Kim Young Sam was inaugurated in Feb. 1993, a major development in the consolidation of democracy in the country. The Kim government has punished numerous erring officials and politicians of past regimes. Political reform laws have also made the Korean people optimistic about economic development. However, the government has not yet given the country a new and revitalized identity. Furthermore, the government has wasted time purging the past rather than instituting structural reforms that would prevent such mistakes in the future.

Democratization and environmental politics in Taiwan
Article Abstract:
The Taiwanese ruling party Kuomintang's efforts to resolve environmental protests reflect its policies toward democratization. The protests, which are likened to the NIMBY syndrome, have been addressed with consideration to citizens' rights to a healthier environment. The regime has also managed to protect its financial interests in industrial polluters through effective conflict resolution. Meanwhile, the Kuomintang has used its client-based political machinery to meet the challenges that democratization entails.
