State and concentration in Korea's first republic, 1948-60
Article Abstract:
South Korea's First Republic, 1848-1969, played an important role in promoting the growth of the cotton industry. Imports of American and Japanese cotton textiles were banned while liberal credit provisions were used to purchase American cotton and modernize Japanese machinery, all of which helped boost Korean productivity. This was possible because a manufacturing base was already in existence, foreign support was available and the cotton manufacturers provided funds to the ruling party.
