Taiwan in 1997: an embattled government in search of new opportunities
Article Abstract:
Taiwan's government struggled for constitutional reformations in 1997 through the convention of the National Assembly in May and June. The continuous failure of the Nationalist Party of China in legislative elections which affected the division of the government and Taiwan's sliding in international competitiveness due to massive investment regulations were the reasons behind the planned constitutional amendments. Moreover, strenuous diplomatic decisions associated with Hong Kong's turnover called for modifications in Taiwan's external agreements with Hong Kong and China.

Taiwan in 1995: electoral politics and cross-strait relations
Article Abstract:
Taiwan had to contend with political turbulence and strained relations with China in 1995. At the beginning of the year, Chinese Communist Party General Secretary Jiang Zemin issued a proposal for Taiwan-China reunification. However, talks on the proposal were abruptly disrupted upon Taiwanese Pres. Lee Teng-hui's visit to the US. Although the ruling Kuomintang maintained its dominance in the Legislative Yuan, internal conflict prevailed in the group. As the upcoming presidential election draws nearer, China is likely to engage Taiwan in a psychological warfare.

Political change in Taiwan
Article Abstract:
National and local factions in the Nationalist Party of China (Kuomintang or KMT) have emerged, making it more difficult for the party to recruit talented people. Factionalism has highlighted KMT's two major problems: the mainlander-Taiwanese conflict within the party and the country's lack of political identity. The KMT has to adhere to democratic principles in order to maintain political leadership in Taiwan.
