The 1994 Nepal elections: emerging trends in party politics
Article Abstract:
The elections held in Nepal in Nov. 1994 showed the prevailing shift in party politics. While the Nepali Congress' (NC) hold to power has weakened significantly, the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) has enhanced its presence in the government. However, neither party is certain of stability as conflicting beliefs and personal grudges persist. The newly-established Rashtriya Prajatantra Party is unlikely to fill the vacuum that either NC or CPN will create. Essentially, Nepali democracy is being threatened by the instability of dominant political parties.

Nepal in 1994: the Hung parliament!
Article Abstract:
The Communist Party of Nepal-United Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) became Nepal's second democratically elected government with its victory in the 1994 elections. The CPN-UML won over the Nepali Congress, which had been perceived as ineffectual after internal disputes rocked its cabinet during the year. However, no party held a clear majority in parliament. Nepal's 1994 economic performance did not significantly improved over the previous years while there were strains in its relations with India and Bhutan.

Nepal in 1995: the communist-rule experiment
Article Abstract:
Nepal had to confront political instability and mounting economic problems in 1995. The current coalition government tries to accommodate narrow party interests at the expense of democracy. Pollution and other environmental problems are areas of concern that remain unattended. Nepal is also plagued with ethnic conflict and regionalism. While the country concentrated on the Bhutanese refugee problem in 1995, it neglected relations with other countries.
