The Thai parliamentary elections of 1992: return to democracy in an atypicalyear
Article Abstract:
The parliamentary elections held in Thailand in Mar 1992 and Sep 1992 were characterized by military cooptation of political parties, establishment of pollwatch committees and generation of a clear electoral mandate. The elections marked the shift to a democratic regime. Thus, these characteristics are not expected to recur in forthcoming elections primarily because promilitary leaders and the military itself have lost their influence in political circles. Civilian power in government was restored during the Sep 1992 elections.

Thailand in 1995: open society, dynamic economy, troubled politics
Article Abstract:
Thailand's dismal political situation was a sharp contrast to the country's dynamic economy. While the economy grew by 8% in 1995 over the previous year, the government's success in handling the economy was overshadowed by corruption, diplomatic problems with the US, strained civil-military relations and bureaucratic ineptitude in managing domestic problems. Thailand has yet to prove that its democratically elected government can be effective and efficient over the long term.
