Two applications for admission to U$C
Article Abstract:
Jokes about the University of Southern California (USC) combine two stereotypes, those of stupid athletes and wealthy undergraduates, and this combination is quite unique. Most of the leading US football teams come from state schools. These stereotypes are current in northern California and form part of the state's north-south rivalry. However, they occur on the USC campus as well and here it is a case of self-stereotype. Whether self-stereotype leads to self-hate is not clear, perhaps most of the USC community is proud of the wealth of its student body and its successful football team.

Binary opposition in myth: the Propp/Levi-Strauss debate in retrospect
Article Abstract:
Russian folklorist Vladimir Propp identified 31 characteristics in 1928 that he claimed defined Russian fairy tales. In 1955 French anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss proposed to define mythological thought through an algebraic system of functions and terms that showed the opposition paradigm. This conflict might be resolved by treating binary opposition as a universal, present in myth, folklore, curses and riddles.
