The account of the decision of primary care physician Dr Thomas DeBerardinis to leave the medical profession is presented, as an illustration of the critical state of health care in Philadelphia, United States. A combination of pressures such as long days and endless paperwork is affecting standards of patient care and professional fulfillment.

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the death in Sep 1999 of Jesse Gelsinger, a volunteer in research being undertaken at Pennsylvania State University's Institute for Human Gene Therapy, are discussed. It was established that tests had indicated that Gelsinger should not have participated in the trials.
