The "emergence of the Samurai" and the military history of early Japan
Article Abstract:
Recent works by Karl F. Friday, William Wayne Farris, H. Paul Varley and Eiko Ikegami reflect a variety of conflicting interpretations of the early military history of Japan that led to the development of the samurai. Many differences arise from giving a broader or narrower definition of 'samurai'; others come from focusing on changes that led to the emergence of the samurai, versus overall continuities in early Japanese military history. One general conclusion is the need for caution in applying terms related to feudalism to the military history of Japan.
