The military and democratization in Africa
Article Abstract:
The role of the military in the democratization process of Africa has been examined. Africa experienced an era of 'return to politics' in the 1990s after decades of authoritarian rule. Existing political literature finds military rule as incompatible with democracy. The military and other repressive machinery of the state are considered not to be optimal points in investigating democratization. The study finds that soldiers can help foster democracy in Africa even if they have opposed it so many times in the past.
