The value of vulnerability: Sexual coercion and the nature of love in Japanese court literature
Article Abstract:
The nature of love in premodern Japanese literature is examined in the context of emotional dynamics. Current work in anthropology and social psychology supports the supposition that emotions differ across cultures. It is argued that Japanese court literature portrayed pity as a significant component of love, with vulnerability a highly valued trait. It is suggested that men in court society considered sexual coercion of women to be bad form. However the common use of aggression in the process of seduction almost obscures the currency of this notion.

Beyond "pure" literature: mimesis, formula, and the postmodern in the fiction of Murakami Haruki
Article Abstract:
Murakami Haruki represents a breed of emerging authors that do not conform to the restrictions of pure Japanese literature. Haruki claims that he is not offering an antithesis to traditional literature, rather, he does what he feels is more suited to his needs as a writer. His writing style has an international ambience and will appeal to foreign audiences due to his reference to English idioms and words. Ironically, it is these same formulaic structures that have influenced Western scholars of Japanese literature to reject his work.
