Toward a new appreciation of Mme de Genlis: the influence of 'Les Battuecas' on George Sand's political and social thought
Article Abstract:
Consideration of the influence of the novel 'Les Battuecas' by French author/educator Stephanie de Genlis (1746-1830), Stephanie-Felicitie Ducrest de Saint-Aubin, comtesse de Genlis, on George Sand's political and social thought can lead to new appreciation of de Genlis. Sand read the amazingly modern novel with enthusiasm at the age of 16-17 according to her autobiography. It analyzes the relationship of property to class structures and political power in the 19th century. Genlis, who had to flee France and support herself through writing, had lasting influence on Sand as a novelist and influenced Sand's feelings about social reform.

Abortion and contamination of the social order in Annie Ernaux's 'Les Armoires vides.'
Article Abstract:
The narrator's body in the novel 'Les Armoires vides' by Annie Ernaux expresses a conflict between the proletariat and the bourgeoisie. The narrator's proletarian background is seen as residing at her core, and an illegal abortion represents bourgeois culture's attempt to excise her childhood memories and values. Bodily fluids are described as transgressing boundaries to contaminate the sterile surface representing bourgeois social order.
