Training cooperative officers for village level work: traditional vs. pedagogical orientation

Article Abstract:

Participatory pedagogical training will enable cooperative officers to help villagers participate in the social, economic and cultural development of Nigeria. An analysis of the Cooperative Department in the Rivers State of Nigeria shows that the hierarchal structure and poor working conditions of the officials at the village level hinder effective development. The Rural Development Training Center has been established at Aluu, near Port-Harcourt, for the participatory training of cooperative officers.

Encounters of insurgent youth associations with the state in the oil rich Niger delta region of Nigeria

Article Abstract:

Two active youth associations, which have had encounters with the state of Nigeria since 1998, the Ijaw Youth Council and Isoko National Youth Movement, revealed violent encounters, occasioned by an insensitive state that is prone to repression as an instrument of conflict resolution. Several lessons emerge from the analysis like violent mobilization, intense civic confrontation with the state and intense civil society mobilization.
