Women and wealth: F. Scott Fitzgerald, Edith Wharton and Paul Bourget
Article Abstract:
F. Scott Fitzgerald's portrayal of woman as the motivator for American industry contains echoes of 'Outre-Mer,' a book of articles by French writer Paul Bourget. Though the book was long out of print when Fitzgerald was old enough to read it, the connection between the two works may have come from a third source, Edith Wharton. Wharton was a friend of Bourget's and read all his work, often incorporating ideas into her fiction. Fitzgerald read and admired Wharton's work and therefore Bourget's idea most likely was transmitted to Fitzgerald through Wharton.

"His mind aglow": the biological undercurrent in Fitzgerald's 'Gatsby' and other works
Article Abstract:
F. Scott Fitzgerald showed extraordinary interest in evolutionary biology during his time. His preoccupation with this subject matter is evident in his works such as 'The Great Gatsby,' 'This Side of Paradise' and 'The Beautiful and Damned.' Fitzgerald was particularly concerned with the related principles of accident and heredity, the question of eugenics as a possible remedy for many societal ills and the revolutionary theory of sexual selection proposed by Charles Darwin in 'The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex.'
