Writing the American revolution: war veterans in the nineteenth-century cultural memory
Article Abstract:
The development of a new nation is dependent on mass shedding of a colonial past that had come to signify economic and cultural dependence. Hence, war veterans are at a loss as to their rightful place in a new society. It is imperative that narrative writings provide the necessary emotional sustenance to these veterans so that they do not feel like the marginalized members of society that they have actually become. These writings have to back up the oral networks, and the sense of history created from them, if they are to maintain a strong bond between the past and present.
