A glass ceiling slides above Aitken
Article Abstract:
Jonathan Aitken, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, has had a long political career, and has always stood up well to the pressures which political life brings. He has been seen as handsome, rich and glamorous, and is respected for his intelligence and sharpness. However, some observers see him as too clever, and his image has been tarnished by recent revelations that a company of which he was a director supplied arms to Iran. It is now unlikely that he will rise any higher in his political career.

Revealed: Minister's call to sell arms to Iraq just before war
Article Abstract:
A letter from former secretary of state for trade and industry Nicholas Ridley to Margaret Thatcher, the then prime minister, has been part of the evidence presented to Sir Richard Scott's inquiry into the sale of arms to Iraq. It indicates that senior government minister were considering lifting the arms embargo on Iraq only shortly before that country invaded Kuwait. There is now likely to be growing pressure for the findings of the inquiry to be published as soon as possible.

Evidence of Iran arms deal puts new pressure on Aitken
Article Abstract:
The future of Jonathan Aitken, chief secretary to the treasury, has once again come under scrutiny following revelations that the government was warned by intelligence in 1988 that weapons sold by BMARC, a company of which he was a director, could be going to Iran. Customs and Excise is now to investigate claims that BMARC contravened the arms embargo during the Iran-Iraq war. Jonathan Aitkent denies that he ever had any suspicions that arms were being shipped to Iraq.
