It is widely recognized in Malta that positive links with the European Union are vital to the island's economy, even though Malta has suspended its efforts to join the European Union. The economy of Malta is forecast to grow by around 3.5% in real terms in 1998, from 4.1% in 1997, with inflation set to rise to around 4% from 3.3%. The government must make particular efforts to reduce the budget deficit, which takes 11% of gross domestic product.
