Article Abstract:

Novelist Jane Rogers is not very well known, even though she has published five successful novels since 1982. She is still unable to earn a proper living from writing, and feels that she has not gained the recognition she deserves. Male novelists are often much more well known than their female counterparts, as they seem to get more publicity. Her work has great intellectual ambition and scope, and does not focus on subjects which have been the traditional domain of female novelists.

Jeanette: could anyone be as good as she thinks she is?

Article Abstract:

It is very unusual for a writer to come from an austere working class background, according to writer Jeanette Winterson. She feels that the working class is culturally impoverished and that this can be an almost insurmountable handicap. Her writing career was greatly assisted by crime novelist Ruth Rendell, who allowed her to write at her home. She is due to publish a collection of short stories in summer 1998, and is also writing a script of 'The Passion' for Miramax.

In the footsteps of fallen heroes

Article Abstract:

The First World War still has great relevance for modern society, according to Pat Barker, winner of the 1995 Booker Prize.
