UK: RULES ON BEER ORDERS REVOKED
Article Abstract:
Restrictions on the number of public houses owned by one brewer will be lifted, the UK Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, Stephen Byers, revealed on 1 December 2000. Changes to rules covering the public house and brewing arena, also known as Beer Orders, stem from the major changes that have taken place in period since the measures were drawn up. Under 15% of UK pubs are now owned by the leading brewers, compared with around 53% when the rules were introduced. The rules stop brewers from owning or possessing exclusive supply arrangements with over 2,000 pubs along with half the highest number of outlets owned since 10 July 1989.
