UK: SCOTTISH SALMON FARMING MAY BE CURBED
Article Abstract:
Concern about damage to the environment will lead to the enforcement of stricter restrictions on Scottish salmon farming. No new sites can be created unless the owners can prove the environment will be improved. The ruling, which has been enforced by the Scottish Executive, marks a significant break with past practice, as the industry has enjoyed years of official support. Salmon farming has been blamed for the spread of the 'fish flu' virus, as well as the decimation of sea trout and shellfish poisoning. The Scottish salmon industry is worth GB[pound] 260mn and there are now 330 farms, a ten-fold rise since 1980.

The noble salmon: Wild. Mysterious. Prized above all other fish. And dying out in rivers all over Europe
Article Abstract:
The future of the Atlantic salmon seems very uncertain, with stocks having declined dramatically over recent years. Indeed, the UK Environment Agency has indicated that it is considering implementing a ban on all net and rod fishing for salmon from Jan 1, 1999, until at least the middle of summer 1999. One of the most serious threats to the wild salmon comes from farmed salmon. Farms located in Scottish sea lochs and Norwegian fjords have polluted the seabed, and salmon farms have also proved to be reservoirs of sea lice.
