A European road comes to the US
Article Abstract:
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) sees great potential for wide US use of stone mastic asphalt (SMA), a heavy-duty asphalt-cement paving reinforced with fibers and a hard stone aggregate. SMA roads, developed in 1967 in West Germany and now widely used also in the Netherlands and Scandinavia, have proved highly durable. So far, SMA test sections placed in 1991 in Michigan, Georgia, Missouri, Wisconsin and Indiana have done well. The FHWA, however, says contractors must be able to maintain quality while keeping down costs and sticking to US production speed standards.
