A cutting edge

Article Abstract:

Surface coatings such as titanium nitride (TiN) for cutting tools are essential because of substantial savings due to longer tool life and reduced machine downtime. These tools have to be recoated after sharpening to retain maximum performance. However, recoating with TiN resulted in problems such as delamination or peelback, tool surface roughness and defect formation and growth. As a solution to these problems, better surface coatings have been developed such as the SuperTiN product.

Cutting costs to boost profits

Article Abstract:

During a recession, with prices limited by demand and total volume of sales not growing, greater profits can come only from reduced costs. One quick, easy way is to renegotiate suppliers' prices. Another is to review the manufacturing methods for a product once it is past the design and introductory stage. Short-term cost-cutting measures should justify themselves quickly; long-term ones, such as robotic assembly, should be broken into short-term steps.

Turbo boost

Article Abstract:

The role of turbochargers in the delivery of air quality improvements and reduced vehicle carbon dioxide emissions is discussed. Turbocharger increases power output by a factor of two and also enables the re-circulation of a large proportion of exhaust gas (EGR) which lowers oxygen concentration and reduces combustion temperature.
