A plum of an island: sensationalism dogs an animal laboratory upgrade

Article Abstract:

Controversy surrounds a proposal to upgrade the Department of Agriculture's Plum Island, NY, infectious disease laboratory to biosafety level 4 status, allowing research on more dangerous microbes. The upgrade will allow the laboratory to study fatal infectious diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans, and may be used by bioterrorists.

Nuclear breeder reactors were in demand when energy prices were high, but low prices in recent years and public opposition to nuclear energy made them unattractive. Their use by developed nations is increasing as the countries want to make energy more available to developing countries.
