A stockholder's story
Article Abstract:
An engineer recounts his frustrations when his engineering firm, where he is a partner, went public. Although his equity increased by about six times, he was no longer able to receive monthly checks, which he used to do when he was an assignee partner of the firm. His 10% to 20% return on investment was transformed into a nominal dividend, which was only 3.5% of his partner equity before the firm went public. He finds it strange that he would have to give up his ownership of the firm by selling his stock just to avail of his financial returns. Nevertheless, he intends to sell his stock eventually.

Article Abstract:
The effects of the new American shipping law on Japanese shipping lines are examined. The new law facilitates the formation of cartels, which will allow separate Japanese lines to consolidate. The new law, however, permits cartel members to set different rates or services terms. The Japanese fear this condition may result in price wars. Pacific shipping trade is growing with increasing competition from the American Sea-Land and Taiwan's Evergreen.
