Seven per cent in '97
Article Abstract:
Media speculation anticipates large increases in UK house prices in 1997 but an economist predicts that the rise will be only about 7%. This will be after a 5% rise in 1996. The cause of the 1996 rise has been a mismatch of supply with demand partly due to prospective sellers being caught in the negative-equity trap. Higher interest rates will lift people out of this trap so there will be more activity rather than increased prices. Fears of higher interest rates following the 1997 general election will go on to restrict mortgage demand.
