Agencies scramble to measure public impact of research

Article Abstract:

Research agencies are submitting plans to measure progress toward specific goals with their 1998 budget requests, to comply with the Government Performance and Results Act. Such assessment is difficult despite a National Weather Service office's tornado-prediction record offered as a benchmark.

Korea plans new tokamak machine

Article Abstract:

South Korea announced plans to build a superconducting tokamak as part of the Korean National Fusion Project, and hopes to join the International Thermonuclear Reactor project in 2010. Korean scientists seek help from the US, which because of gutted budgets may offer only technical advice.

China's unique environment favors large intervention trials

Article Abstract:

China's stable population and sharp variations in cancer incidence make it an ideal location for large-scale intervention trials. Trials are currently underway in the areas of gastric cancer and neural tube defects.
