Alternative landfill covers pass the test

Article Abstract:

The Sandia National Laboratories has conducted the Alternative Landfill Cover Demonstration to assist regulatory agencies in weighing the merits of alternative landfill covers. The study was necessitated by the growing failures of landfills which are vulnerable to clay liner drying and cracking. Six landfill test covers consisting of two conventional and four alternative cover designs were studied. Results are not conclusive but indicate that less expensive landfill covers perform just as well as or even better than traditional covers.

Excavation allows peek into Florida landfill

Article Abstract:

Researchers from the University of Florida evaluated the leachate collection system integrated in an operating landfill in Putnam County, FL. The researchers found that the landfill system encountered a 30% deterioration in permeability. They also reported a reduction in permeability in the sand and woven fabric liners. The findings will help engineers come up with a safety factor that can be utilized in designing leachate systems.

High-tech landfill caps

Article Abstract:

State and federal regulators are becoming stricter about the closure design of landfills, however not all landfills are easy to close. Important capping stability factors include the amount and length of the slope involved, the interfacial and internal shear, and the amount of waterhead buildup. Some landfills need more layers than others because of erosion problems, drainage or soil separation.
