Ambitious Clinical Trial Stirs Debate

Article Abstract:

The largest and most expensive AIDS treatment trial will be funded by the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). The affects of adding interleukin-2 to the anti-HIV drugs being taken by 4,000 HIV-infected persons will be studied during the next 5 years. The study will cost $43 million. The patent for the treatment is held by Anthony Fauci, director of the NIAID. It will involve 210 sites in 18 countries.

The clinical implications

Article Abstract:

The genetic basis of inherited diseases is explained by other processes besides traditional Mendelian heredity. Recent research shows that mitochondrial DNA inheritance, genetic mosaicism, imprinting, and uniparental disomy, are also involved in disease transmission from parents to offspring. The gap or break in an X chromosome called fragile x causes inherited mental retardation.

Inheritance of acquired characteristics

Article Abstract:

Evidence suggests that inheritance of acquired characteristics exists and has hastened the evolutionary process. Despite scientific and political arguments to the contrary, some genes can be acquired 'horizontally,' and this fact should be acknowledged if science is to advance.
