Analysis of behavior of sand surrounding pile tips

Article Abstract:

Simonini (1996) presented an interesting numerical analysis on the behavior of sand surrounding pile tips. The author introduced the concept of constant amount of particle breakage and adopted the stress dependent shear strength parameter in conducting the study. Findings were expressed in graphical forms of strength, distribution, dilatancy and grain breakage. However, the validity of the results is questionable because the compliance of soil is considered insignificant. The study is not applicable to the field situation wherein the peak strength of soil is mobilized through excessive strain.

Secondary compression of peat with or without surcharging

Article Abstract:

Evidence shows that the observed secondary compression behavior of peat is in good agreement with the C(sub alpha)/C(sub c) compressibility concept. In an extensive laboratory study on fibrous Middleton peat, the effect of sample sterilization on long-term secondary compression was examined. It was suggested that the increase in C(sub alpha) in time in the compression range where C(sub c) decreases with increasing effective stress can be attributed to the biodegradation of some peat specimens during secondary compression.
