Application of NMR spectroscopy to environmental analysis: detection of trace amounts of chemical warfare agents and related compounds in organic extract, water, and sand

Article Abstract:

An international trial and proficiency test of laboratory performance provided for the investigation of trace amounts of chemical warfare agents and related compounds in trace amounts in a variety of samples. Organic extracts, water, sand samples and other materials were examined with the use of NMR spectroscopy to determine the presence of bis(2-chloroethyl)ethylamine (HN-1) and other related compounds. It was proven that NMR spectroscopy, especially a high field spectrometer, could be ideally used in identifying the chemical warfare agents that are present in trace amounts in a variety of environmental samples.
