Biological alchemy: the discovery that skin and bone marow cells can transform into neurons raises hopes -- and many questions

Article Abstract:

Scientists have recently uncovered evidence that stem cells can be harvested from sources other than fetal tissue. Stem cells proliferate very rapidly and result in tissue growth, offering the promise of cures for numerous diseases, including cancer and Parkinson's syndrome. Analysis of the current state of stem cell research is detailed, and forecasts for future development and application of therapies based on this research is provided.

Nanobodies

Article Abstract:

Tinier nanobodies derived from camels and Ilamas would be able to infiltrate a wider range of disease at lower cost than the antibodies. As nanobodies are simpler than antibodies in chemical composition and shape, they could be encoded by a single gene and are easier for microbes to synthesize.

How should we set priorities?

Article Abstract:

Experts from a wide range of backgrounds have agreed on some common solutions that are both feasible and cost-effective, in several recent efforts to explicitly prioritize plans of action for addressing global warming problems. Novel markets are being set up around the world to create economic incentives for slowing climate change, improving freshwater management, restoring overexploited fisheries and preserving biodiversity.
