Browner predicts damage to Superfund, environmental programs

Article Abstract:

Cuts to the EPA budget will spawn stalled regulations, fewer inspections, uncollected fines and an 'environmental protection by triage' system. EPA Administrator Carol Browner has predicted that reductions in the EPA budget will have adverse effects on its Superfund and other programs. Already, some 68 major cleanup and recovery actions scheduled for 1996 will be halted owing to the budget cuts, while 20 cleanups have been stalled. Browner has also predicted a slowdown in cleanup efforts and the build-up of a backlog.

EPA research takes a hit in final 1996 budget appropriation

Article Abstract:

Funding for environmental research was reduced by 15% compared to its 1995 appropriation in the final 1996 federal budget. The EPA's Office of Research and Development was allocated only $460 million, or 27% less than the administration's request. The biggest reduction was in Superfund research funding, which saw a $40 million cut, and the Environmental Technology Initiative, whose funding was decreased by $30 million.

EPA budget-driven 'dysfunction' predicted

Article Abstract:

The EPA will be forced to implement spending cuts if Congress continues to pass bills that approve reductions in the agency's budget. The biggest issue that EPA faces is the 50% funding reduction for its overall activities and 36% for Superfund cleanups. EPA officials predict all its programs to dysfunction without the needed funds.
