Canadian ecological research area faces major funding cuts
Article Abstract:
Major reductions in funding are breaking down the Canadian Freshwater Institute and its Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) program. The institute is touted as one of the world's best in outdoor ecological research. The ELA stands to suffer salary cutbacks of at least 55% by 1999 and cannot be assured of research funds beyond Mar. 1997 by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the agency that runs the institute. However, the agency's science director for the central and Arctic regions John Cooley said ELA is merely undergoing downsizing, but does not face imminent phaseout.

Titanium dioxide photocatalysis: treatment hype or hope?

Research scientists and environmental engineers are divided over the potential of titanium dioxide for cleaning polluted water and air. While researchers believe that the innovative process is a breakthrough in environmental protection, environmental engineers doubt the viability of these processes for commercial use, particularly their efficiency and cost. The novel process involves titanium dioxide functioning as a catalyst with ultraviolet light to produce oxidizing agents that kills off organic pollutants in water or air.

Will Bt-based pest resistance management plans work?
Article Abstract:
The controversial use of Bt crops is causing the EPA to adjust its policies, although environmentalists, organic farmers and food safety groups believe that the use of transgenic plants are potentially harmful to the environment. The problem is that the Bt plants, which are designed to produce their own pesticides, may enable insects to develop a resistance to Bt toxins. One way EPA hopes to avoid the problem is to use a high dose/refuge strategy, but this strategy has also resulted in increased scrutiny.
