Challenges in the toolroom
Article Abstract:
Military planes are one of the most challenging aircrafts to build for engineers as the passing of the time makes their requirements more complicated and far more advanced. One fine example of this is the building of British Aerospace's Eurofighter, which requires tighter tolerances and higher operating speeds. These demands have driven engineers to use fewer and more complicated parts, which in turn heightens the pressure on tooling and machining operations.

Article Abstract:
Ottawa Professor Bernard Hodson has developed the Genetix machine based on the universal machine principles of Alan Turing. Turing developed the idea for a universal machine controlled by a tape with a series of symbols serving as its basic program. Hodson has translated Turing's taped codes into an electronic equivalent to create a machine which outperforms existing computers in terms of efficiency, ease of programming and memory.

Article Abstract:
Toolmakers John Emmett and Phil Davies formed High Torque Fastener Systems Ltd. in their attempt to develop a ingenious solution for sheet metal component fastening. The partners created a fastening system based on a computer-generated sheet metal threadform and complemented this system with a similar computer-generated thread design. This allowed high precision fitting and stronger metal fastenings.
