Chemicals and the environment

Article Abstract:

The adverse effects of chemicals in the environment is a primary source of stress that affects the world's ecology and its inhabitants. Future research, therefore, should focus on improving and developing new methods for evaluating, modelling and monitoring the potential long-term impact of chemicals, the byproducts and degradation brought on by them, and the adverse effects on the biochemistry of plants and animals. Support should also be given to creative ideas for modelling and testing impacts, the standardization of testing, and the "mini-ecosystem' approach controlled-approach to testing and simulating ecosystem impact.

Leach models for contaminants immobilized by pH-dependent mechanisms

Article Abstract:

A component-based leach model proved useful in describing leaching of hazardous contaminants that are immobilized by pH-dependent reactions. The model effeciently describes simple chemical systems in which a solid phase provides acid-neutralizing capacity, and the contaminants are immobilized by precipitation or sorption reactions that are dependent on pH. Simulation results reveal that simple half-order models can be utilized to describe leaching if the observed diffusivity can be measured accurately.

Comparison between the predicted fate of organic compounds in landfills and the actual emissions

Article Abstract:

A pilot-scale landfill is constructed to theoretically estimate the decomposition emissions of ordinary household wastes and of twelve organic compounds. A strong correlation is found between actual emissions and those theoretically determined. This indicates that pilot-scale landfills may be a useful tool for studying landfills and predicting their emissions. Accompanying charts and graphs provide additional statistical data.
