Clinton picks Pena to lead Energy

Article Abstract:

Pres Clinton named retiring Transportation Sec Pena to replace Hazel O'Leary as Energy Secretary, in what is said to be a purely political appointment. Pena was considered competent, if low-profile, at DOT, but has no expertise in energy science. Clinton also named William Daley as Commerce Secretary.

Pena to review LHC agreement

Article Abstract:

The Energy Dept will review the US agreement to provide over $500 million to Europe's Large Hadron Collider, at the urging of House Science Committee chmn James Sensenbrenner. He believes the US is getting a poor deal from the Europeans, who failed to support the Superconducting Super Collider.

Global team keeps low profile as it works on Next Collider

Article Abstract:

Richard Burton and his team are taking a low-key approach in developing the science for the Next Linear Collider (NLC). Funding rather than technology will be the greatest challenge in building the $2 billion-$3 billion NLC.
