Article Abstract:

Biodegradation of peat may lead to confusion in the interpretation of secondary compression behavior. An analysis of a fibrous Middleton peat specimen, which was subjected to gamma radiation to reduce biodegradation, shows that peat exhibits a secondary compression behavior in accordance with the prediction of the C(sub alpha)/C(sub c) compressibility concept. It was therefore concluded that uncontrolled laboratory tests can have adverse effects on the behavior of organic materials and that peat irradiation is not necessary to obtain reliable subsurface information from such tests.

Random field modeling of CPT data

Article Abstract:

A variety of model types are presented and evaluated for data gathered during cone penetration tests. Model categories include horizontal spatial variability, autocorrelation functions along transects, autocorrelation functions from horizontal data, experimental semivariogram plotting, estimation of fractal behavior and spatial scales.

Coefficient of consolidation by inflection point method

Article Abstract:

A differential method for computing consolidation and other settlement and soil mechanics problems is presented, and compared to the inflection point method. An assessment is included on the amount of calculations required for both methods.
