Computer-aided liability
Article Abstract:
Questions are being raised in the construction industry as to whether software developersshould share responsibility with engineers for faulty design as a result of software defects. Paul M. Laurie, from the law firm Schiff, Hardin and Waite, disagrees because most design software are mass-marketed and categorized as a good and sold under the same laws as other goods. Remedies for software flaws are restricted to the contract between the developer and the purchaser. The contract is the license printed on the envelope of the software and remedies are confined to the cost of replacing the software.

Manufactured gas plants: Yesterday's pride, today's liability
Article Abstract:
Manufactured gas plants once provided fuel for street lights and reading lamps and were designed to generate gas from coal, carbureted water or oil. Many plants shut down in the 1960s, most being abandoned or razed, but leaving a legacy of environmental pollution. It is important for owners of such properties to undertake careful historical and geological waste assessments of such sites, to avoid possible liabilities. It is assumed that substantial coal tar residues exist below the ground of all former manufactured gas plant (FMGP) sites.
