Conservation targets: do they help?

Article Abstract:

International commissions on ecosystem and biodiversity preservation have called for the protection of 10 to 12% of each nation's land area. This policy would as much as triple the size of areas currently designated as national parks but may be insufficient to prevent major extinctions.

Preserving biodiversity in Korea's Demilitarized Zone

The Korean Peace Bioreserves System offers a way to preserve the biodiversity of the Demilitarized Zone, which has become a unique nature reserve. Development and deforestation has destroyed natural habitats in both South and North Korea.

A study of Illinois prairie chickens documents the genetics of population decline spurring, and being spurred by, inbreeding. The complex web of causation is analyzed, leading to a theory of 'extinction vortex'.
